CityCenterDC Set to Transform into a Public Art Playground this Spring with Energizing Exhibitions and Interactive Programming

Global Artists, Larger-Than-Life Installations, and Social-First Programming will Redefine the Season in Downtown D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 2026) – This spring, CityCenterDC emerges as one of the most dynamic cultural destinations in the country, transforming into an immersive, open-air celebration of art, movement, and community. Partnering with the world-renowned “eco-warrior artists” Gillie and Marc, CityCenterDC will debut one of its most ambitious public art projectsyet: Wild Race Against Time, an awe-inspiring installation featuring 15 anthropomorphic sculptures of endangered animals in various states of motion.

Placed throughout CityCenterDC’s multi-city block development, the larger-than-life sculptures will skateboard, drive vespas, and roller skate throughout the property–creating an interactive, family-friendly destination that challenges visitors to engage with global conservation from a collective mindset. Visitors will also have an opportunity to donate to the Love the Last Wildlife Fund via QR codes displayed throughout the exhibition. The Instagram-ready sculptures are set to come to life at CityCenterDC in early June.

CityCenterDC has also recently welcomed DC-based De Novo Gallery’s “The Window Project,” a bold reimagining of the gallery experience, introducing a new way for art to be discovered and purchased. Transforming storefronts and unexpected urban spaces into curated canvases, artists Ben Tong and Emma Childs will each have their paintings displayed at street-facing windows along the 900 block of I Street this spring, turning everyday moments into encounters with contemporary art.

CityCenterDC will spotlight the performing arts this spring with the return of The Washington Ballet on May 29 and 30 (rain date May 31). The Washington Ballet’s world-class dancers will take over CityCenterDC for a free, public performances for two nights only in what’s become a beloved annual tradition. The performances begin at 6:30 p.m. Arriving early is recommended as seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The return of CityCenterDC’s iconic pink lanterns, an Instagrammable favorite in DC, will also once again transform PalmerAlley into one of Washington’s most photographed spring destinations, celebrating cherry blossom season with a signature visual moment that blends tradition, design, and social storytelling.

“CityCenterDC has always been more than a place for shopping and dining—it’s a platform for creativity, culture, and connection,” said Timothy Lowery, Managing Director – Mixed-Use at Hines. “This season, we’re proud to bring together globally recognized artists and vibrant programming that not only inspires but invites our community to experience the city ina new way.”

Beyond art, CityCenterDC’s spring calendar is designed to energize the city and bring people back outdoors through a curated mix of social and wellness experiences. Highlights include:

Putt in the Park (May 18 – July 12) A custom-designed six-hole mini golf course offering complimentary play inthe heart of downtown—blending leisure, design, and highly shareable moments.

Toned Up Tuesdays (May 5 – July 28) Weekly outdoor fitness classes on The Plaza, inviting guests to move, reset, and connect every Tuesday evening.
