De Novo Gallery
Discover & Purchase Art at CityCenterDC
CityCenterDC has also recently welcomed DC-based De Novo Gallery’s “The Window Project,” a bold reimagining of the gallery experience, introducing a new way for art to be discovered and purchased. Transforming storefronts and unexpected urban spaces into curated canvases, artists Ben Tong and Emma Childs will each have their paintings displayed at street-facing windows along the 900 block of I Street this spring, turning everyday moments into encounters with contemporary art.
Event Details
The Exhibition
Tong has worked with an array of media, from video to installation, and painting. His paintings occupy a threshold between perception and memory, capturing the moment just before a scene dissolves into recollection. Working in oil on canvas and linen, he often forgoes a brush in favor of less traditional painting tools like rags to apply paint directly to the surface, giving his work a raw, layered quality. The results are rich in color and texture, recognizable but not quite realistic, achieving compositions that feel simultaneously vivid and dreamlike.
The Artist
Ben Tong (b. 1981 Toronto, Canada) is an artist living and working in Los Angeles, California. His work has been exhibited internationally at Jack Barrett (New York); Night Gallery (Los Angeles); Bradley Ertaskiran (Montreal); the University of California, Santa Barbara; Commonwealth and Council (Los Angeles); K11 Art Foundation (Hong Kong); and the Art Basel Film program (Hong Kong). He was a fellow at the Villa Aurora Foundation, Berlin, and in residency at the Soma Summer Program, Mexico City. Tong received a BCS in Computer Science from the University of Toronto, a BFA in Photo from CalArts, and an MFA in Art from CalArts. He is represented by Jack Barrett Gallery in New York and Night Gallery in Los Angeles.
